100% recyclable film solutions
Sustainability is playing an increasingly important role in the design of new innovative packaging solutions. Particularly in the area of flexible packaging such as stand-up pouches, there is a strong trend towards functional single-material solutions that can be easily separated and recycled compared to the laminates that are still widely used today; the new packaging law coming into force in January 2019 will give this development an additional boost.
Recently, several single-material solutions for stand-up pouches made of polyethylene have been introduced. The corresponding film products are advertised with the claim that the packaging made from them is recyclable. While single-material polyethylene solutions are well suited for certain packaging applications, other applications require material properties that polyethylene cannot meet.
Packaging manufacturers specializing in converting small and medium film widths are also seeing significant growth thanks to significant growth in digital printing, paving the way for new stand-up pouch solutions. These solutions, together with improvements in digital printing technology, are motivating more and more consumer goods suppliers to meet the increasing demand for more individualization, which in turn requires rapid availability of ever smaller batch sizes of the corresponding packaging solutions. The economical production of small batch sizes is one of the decisive advantages of digital printing. That’s why more and more digital printers specializing in narrow widths are realizing that they can produce flexible packaging as well as labels with minimal investment.
